The position:

Postdoctoral Fellows at CSIRO provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships will help launch their careers, provide experience that will enhance their careers prospects, and facilitate the recruitment and development of potential leaders for CSIRO.

Postdoctoral Fellows are appointed for up to three years and will work closely with a leading Research Scientist or Engineer in their respective field. They carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO with the possibility of novel and important scientific outcomes. They present the findings in appropriate publications and at conferences.

The CSIRO Agriculture Flagship is offering a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Plant Development/Reproduction. The successful candidate will undertake research in a multi-party international humanitarian project aimed at altering reproductive attributes in cowpea and sorghum hybrids to preserve heterosis enabling the maintenance of high yielding seed over multiple generations.

Specifically you will:

• Under the direction of senior research scientists, carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO;
• Develop transcriptomes from reproductive cell types of cowpea and sorghum using laser capture micro-dissection;
• Identify and test cell type specific promoters from genomic sequences and examine their efficacy in altering male and female reproductive modes in transgenic plants when linked to linked coding genes;
• Oversee the design and development of complex constructs and testing functions;
• Undertake regular reviews of relevant literature and patents;
• Produce high quality scientific and technical outputs including journal articles, conference papers and presentations, patents and technical reports;
• Present research outcomes at conferences as agreed with your supervisor;
• Contribute to the development of innovative concepts and ideas for further research

Location: Waite Campus, Urrbrae (Adelaide) South Australia
Salary: AUD81K - AUD88K plus up to 15.4% superannuation (pension fund)

To be considered, you will hold a doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in Molecular Biology, Genetics Biochemistry or a relevant scientific discipline enabling capacity to undertake described roles.

You will also have:

• High level communication and collaboration skills and a record of publications in quality, peer reviewed journals
• A track record in plant cell and developmental biology and plant reproduction with strong underpinning skills in microscopy and molecular biology;
• The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, often regionally dispersed research team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research;
• record of science innovation and creativity, plus the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.

Owing to terms of the fellowship, candidates must not have more than 3 years of relevant Postdoctoral experience.
